More info
H H Stephenson was one of the leading figures in English cricket during the 1850s and 60s. He excelled in all departments of the game and was captain of the all-conquering Surrey team of the period, leading light in William Clarke's All England Eleven, batsman, bowler, wicket-keeper and coach. He took the first recorded hat-trick, was a member of the first overseas touring team (George Parr's team to USA and Canada, 1859), and captained the first touring team to Australia in 1861/62 (see David Frith's full length tour book, The Trailblazers, published by Boundary Books in 1999).
